About This Toolkit

This toolkit emerged from years of community organizing experience following mass violence incidents. It draws from trauma-informed care principles, memorial planning best practices, and youth development research. Each component has been tested in real community settings and refined through feedback from mental health professionals, faith leaders, educators, and community members who have lived through collective trauma.

The goal is not to provide a one-size-fits-all solution but to offer frameworks that communities can adapt to their specific context, cultural background, and recovery timeline. Healing takes time, and the approach must evolve as community needs change.

Assumptions: Communities have at least one organizer willing to coordinate recovery efforts, local institutions remain functional, and there is some external funding or resource availability.

Limitations: This toolkit does not replace professional mental health treatment. It assumes access to basic communication tools and some organizational capacity. Cultural adaptation is essential for effectiveness.

Next Steps: Connect with local faith leaders, school administrators, and mental health providers to begin mapping recovery needs. Start with one small project rather than trying to address everything at once.
